winter weather check
[info]jenavira wrote in [info]madisonwi
I was supposed to drive across town today to register with a temp agency, and now everything is covered in snow. I have no idea how the main roads are, though -- should I brave it, or call and see if I can reschedule?

ice skates?
[info]la_luna_llena wrote in [info]madisonwi
I know I'm late to the game, but can anyone suggest where I can find used ice skates?

I'm totally new to the sport, but am interested in picking it up. . .

fried pickle chips

I have been tasked with discovering where in Madison one can find fried pickle chips (not spears--we know lots of places with spears).
Any ideas, hivemind?

My taxes are going to be less than easy this year and I'll need every last ounce of possible return.
Recommendations for reputable, non percentage-based fee preparers in town?

If you find yourself at the crossroads of insomnia and insanity, this is the place to channel those demons that keep you sleepless. Vivid pictures, poetry, ruminations, and confessions from the nether hours between dusk and dawn. Originally formed to celebrate the city at night, there's a strong urban theme.

Self-described as "a little community with a lot of rage," you can soak up impassioned vibes and read blistering exposes detailing sexist attitudes in the news, pop culture, and science! A must-join community if you are, or love, a feminist. (NB: the topic of whether a "man" can be a feminist is outside the scope of this spotlight, but will probably wind up on the Writer's Block.)

Current car battery sales?!?
[info]dorothyk wrote in [info]madisonwi
I just looked through a neighbor's Sunday's State Journal and did not find even one automotive ad, other then cars for sale. Since I've had to jump start my car a number of times in cold weather this winter, the correct answer is to get a new battery... but I need to find value.

Wondering whether anyone has thoughts on the best places to get value in buying a battery, as well as whether folks are aware of any sales going on around town.

Thanks for any info you might have!

lasik consultation
[info]fencert wrote in [info]madisonwi
Since my visual acuity is diminishing with age, but sharp vision is requisite for my favorite sports (archery and fencing) I am considering some kind of corrective eye surgery. Has anyone out there had good experiences with Madison based services of this kind? How about bad experiences? Any recommendations for the particular type of surgery if I want to improve the overall sharpness of my vision? Looking to set up a consultation, but want to avoid any of the pitfalls that others may have encountered...

I tell myself that this will eventually pay for itself with saved expenses on glasses and contact lenses, but really I just prefer how I look without glasses and I'm sick of them getting in the way when I play with my 6 year old, or fogging up in the middle of a fencing match.

Bondage gear shops?
[info]gentlest_sin wrote in [info]madisonwi
Hey Madison!

I'm looking for shops in the area that sell bondage/bdsm gear, specifically leather collars/cuffs. Red Letter was woefully disappointing and that's the only store like that I know of in Madison. Any recommendations? I'll go up to an hour away (ps anyone know if Naughty but Nice in Beloit is still around/has collars or cuffs?)

Thanks kindly.

Gym Membership - Great Deal - Last Call

EDIT: This offer has been taken. Thanks!

Supreme Health and Fitness: www.supremehealthfitness.com

January is FREE (we already paid this month)!!!

We moved away from Madison and still need to finish out 7 months of a two year contract at Supreme. The only way to get rid of it is to transfer it to another couple. It is a really good deal...2-year contract price for only 7 months (and the cost continues after the contract is up if you want to continue).

$63.30 (including tax) for 2 people, unlimited use of the gym and pool.

If you are interested, please let me know. Thanks so much!!

Anyone use any of the doggy daycares in town? Which do you like? Which do you dislike? Same goes for groomers. So far we've used Petsmart for grooming--pretty good, but long and expensive--and Tabby and Jack's, which is holistic and cheaper and faster.

Bonus points for places that I can somehow get to and from with a dog sans car or other ideas.

Where to donate coat?
[info]eirias wrote in [info]madisonwi
First time poster here! My husband has an old winter coat that we're looking to get rid of. It's not in great shape (couple of tears, couple of stains), so I'm not sure Vinnie's would want to try selling it. On the other hand, it could still keep someone warm. Is there a place in town that takes coats to give away to people in need?

Best pools for lap swimming?
[info]smisen wrote in [info]madisonwi
I'm training for a sprint triathlon this summer and want to get started with some lap swimming.  Does anyone have any pool recommendations? Preferably one that doesn't require a monthly membership and is located on the North or East sides.  Oh, and adults only (or at least no screaming children).

Thanks in advance for your help!
